Quick Blog: I cant wait but I have to.

Hello Dear Readers,

Well the title says it all, I am going to have to wait ’till Monday to start the first recipe. Why you may ask? Well, the simple reason is, that I want to test it on my friends in my  Rotary Clubs Council  on Tuesday!  So that it doesn’t go stale, I’ll have to wait. It’s so frustrating! However, as promised I am going to do the recipes from A-W as there is no X Y or Z in the index.

I will be doing what Eliza Acton did all those years ago and testing her recipes. However, in some respects using her book is like having her looking over my shoulder, rather than simply following in her footsteps.

Did you know it took her 10 years to write Modern Cookery? According to her Biography, published in 2011, which I can highly recommend. These two books bring her world to life in such colour that I now look at my surroundings in a different light and think there is little that she would find  familiar if she could return to the here and now.

If you’re interested, the biography’s review is here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/dec/30/real-mrs-beeton-acton-review. I have been reading it over coffee, in the atmospheric, wood panelled Turl Bar of The Mitre in Oxford. This is also next to Oxford’s eighteenth century covered market.

My hopes are that my blog, with all the ups and the downs, will bring Eliza Acton to people as the first female cookery writer of our times, and in my opinion the most interesting. It certainly was not Mrs Beeton.

Best wishes and roll on Monday.

Deborah xx
